Ascensia is seeking the next big leap forward in diabetes self-management that uses digital technology to improve the lives of those with type 2 diabetes. They are seeking innovative digital solutions that can genuinely change behavior, support self-management and enhance patient experience for people with type 2 diabetes. The solution must be easy to use by all patients, and help to improve patient outcomes. These improvements can be clinical or non-clinical, however the overall goal should be long term improvements in the health of patients.

Background

Diabetes currently affects over 400 million people globally, and is expected to reach more than 640 million by 2040. Individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes have many aspects to the disease that need to be managed, such as food choices, exercise, medication, and monitoring of blood glucose levels. Ascensia would like to find innovative ways of managing type 2 diabetes that make use of digital technologies, and therefore has launched this challenge to find the best advances in diabetes management.

Constraints

Solutions should:

  • Be easy to use
  • Improve the patient experience and outcomes, either
    • Clinically – HbA1c, glucose trends, weight loss, blood pressure, cholesterol  etc.
    • Non-clinically – Program adherence, behavioral changes, patient engagement, medication tracking, diet, exercise, change in habits, etc.
  • Be sufficiently novel and unique vs existing or known solutions
  • Be sustainable over long time periods
  • Be scalable to potentially help millions of patients
  • Have permission to use any third party works or data sources
