Background:

Cancer occupies the top of the death rate of Japanese people. Among them, rates of stomach cancer and colorectal cancer particularly are increasing. In addition, the stomach and colon have a direct connection with food and nutrition, and respond to imbalances in the diet.

Lactic acid bacteria that inhibit causative factors for stomach cancer (e.g. Helicobacter pylori) have already been commercialized by food-related companies. In the case of stomach cancer, since Helicobacter pylori is specified as one marker of the onset factor, searching for materials that can effectively prevent the growth of Helicobacter pylori is the main focus of activity. In the case of colorectal cancer, although the onset factor (marker) is unclear and the mechanism of action is unknown, lactoferrin and lactic acid bacteria have been tested for prevention of onset, and then commercialized.

Colorectal cancer, we are interested in:

  • Materials that can prevent onset and recurrence
  • Materials that can inhibit onset or growth of colonic polyps
  • If the onset factors of colon cancer can be clearly indicated, materials that can affect such factors
  • Non-pharmaceutical materials such as beta-glucan that inhibit the growth of cancer or decrease the cancer cells

Materials that have the effect of curing the cancer or preventing severity will also be of interest.
