The Fusfeld Group, Inc. specializes in technology & innovation management. It was started in 1991; building on the foundations of The Technology Management Group of Pugh-Roberts Associates, Inc., which Fusfeld started in 1975.
Professional Activities
Alan Fusfeld focuses on providing consulting services and training in R&D and innovation leadership, technology strategy, technology planning (alignment of technology plans with business plans), technology transfer, innovation effectiveness, R&D productivity, R&D metrics and corporate new ventures. He has contributed various papers and management techniques to these areas since 1970 when his first papers were published.
Fusfeld’s most recent papers were published in 2010. Over the last several years, his papers have focused on technology roadmapping, R&D metrics, the “technology value pyramid,” “anchored scales” for determining R&D project risk, and R&D portfolio optimization. His most recent articles are about advanced marketing and R&D and innovation leadership.
Currently, Fusfeld is a member of the Industrial Research Institute 2011 Program Committee. In this capacity, he is co-chairing a special session this Spring on “Innovation Prizes and Other Incentive Mechanisms to Enable Success in Open-Innovation Strategies.”
Alan Fusfeld has been a technology management and strategy consultant for nearly forty years. His clients have been Fortune 500 corporations or their international equivalents. Assignments have included such companies as Alcan, Allen-Bradley, Amoco, Akzo, AT&T, British Petroleum, Corning, DuPont, Kodak, ExxonMobil, Helene Curtis, ICI, John Deere, Johnson Controls, JohnsonWax, Kodak, MeadWestvaco, Monsanto, Motorola, Nabisco, Ralston Purina, US West, Warner-Lambert, and Weyerhaeuser.
Academic and Related Activities/Recognition
Fusfeld has lectured extensively for clients and for various non-client groups such as the Industrial Research Institute (IRI), and from 1973–1990, at the MIT Sloan School Summer Session, “The Management of Technology, Development and Engineering.” He works closely in support of IRI’s Research-on-Research Committee projects and is a 2008 winner of the IRI’s Maurice Holland Award for the best paper published in 2007.
Alan Fusfeld received his B.E.S. degree in Mechanics from The Johns Hopkins University in 1970, and was a member of MIT’s Ph.D. Program in Management of Technology (1970–75), where his dissertation paper was entitled, “Market and Competitive Factors Affecting the Rates of Technological Change” (partially published in 1973). Fusfeld is listed in Who’s Who in American Finance and Industry, and is a past President of the Boston Research Directors Club.
