Dr. Louis Berneman
Louis Berneman is a Past President of the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM). He currently also serves on the Board of Directors of the Licensing Executives Society (LES USA & Canada) and the LES Foundation. He is a former Director of the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Association and Greater Philadelphia Venture Group.

From 1995–2005, Dr. Berneman was Managing Director of the Center for Technology Transfer (CTT) at the University of Pennsylvania. During his decade long tenure at Penn, CTT became recognized as one of the most successful university technology commercialization organizations in the world. During this period, CTT:

  • identified more than 3000 commercial opportunities,
  • filed more than 1500 patents,
  • consummated more than 600 license agreements,
  • launched more than 80 new start up ventures,
  • generated more than $100 million in license income, and
  • created a license portfolio with an estimated net present value of greater than $100 million.

Prior to joining Penn in 1995, Berneman was Director, Licensing and Business Development at Virginia’s Center for Innovative Technology. In 1984, Berneman founded and served until 1989 as President and CEO of Biotherapeutics, Inc., a provider of cancer biotherapy services. In 1990, he helped found and served as a Director of Innotech, Inc., an ophthalmic manufacturing system. From 1982–1984, he was VP of Marketing and Sales of Immuno-Modulators Laboratories, Inc., a development-stage biopharmaceuticals company. From 1976–1982, he was Assistant Professor of Education at University of Houston.

Dr. Berneman is a frequent speaker on technology transfer, patents and licensing, negotiation, valuation, conflict of interest, and economic development at meetings of the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), the Licensing Executive Society (LES), and business conferences. He also serves as a consulting and testifying expert in patent and license disputes.

Dr. Berneman holds a baccalaureate degree in history from Pennsylvania State University, a teaching credential from University of California at Santa Barbara, and masters and doctoral degrees in education from Teachers College, Columbia University.
