Robert R. Matheson
Mr. Matheson
Bob Matheson was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1951. He attended Michigan Technological University, where he received B.S. degrees in both chemistry and mathematics. During one of the summers of that undergraduate period, he was supported by an NSF summer student grant in the biochemistry department at Michigan State University, where he was introduced to the physical chemistry of large molecules. That interest has never faded and it was molded through graduate work on protein folding with Professor Harold Scheraga at Cornell and a postdoctoral fellowship with Professor Paul Flory at Stanford on the physics of liquid crystalline macromolecules.

In 1980 Bob joined DuPont’s Central Research and Development (CR&D) department in what was then the polymer physics group. In the ensuing 25 years with DuPont, he has worked in a variety of supervisory and management positions in CR&D, Engineering Polymers, and the coatings businesses. He has published more than 40 scientific papers and is co-inventor on two (2) issued patents. Since 1997, he has been the Technical Manager for Strategic Technology in DuPont Performance Coatings. Among his team’s recent accomplishments are the 2003 DuPont Marketing Excellence Award for introducing the “superhighsolids” low-emission paint system at DaimlerChrylser, and the 2004 Automotive News PACE award for commercializing the “One Pass TuTone” low-emission process at Ford Motor.
