| A self contained microprocessor based system, such as a thermostatic control, produces its own operating power from a thermocouple array heated by a pilot flame. In contrast to an electromechanical thermostat which requires no electrical power for operation, a microprocessor based electronic thermostat requires electrical operating power at a voltage of from five to twelve volts. In some applications, such as domestic water heaters and some swimming pool and spa heaters, utility based electrical service may not be conveniently available. The required voltage is produced by stepping up the fraction of a volt produced by the thermocouple array. Voltage step up is accomplished with a special DC driven oscillator in the form of a field effect transistor with a high impedance feedback network between its drain and gate electrodes.
