| Direct coupling of bioluminescence to thin layer chromatography (TLC) provides an unique and effective way of monitoring toxicity in complex mixtures like waste water or food extracts. By TLC such samples are separated into discrete substance zones on the TLC plate. For the selective detection of the toxic compounds, the plate is coated with a bioluminescence kit employing a simple dipping procedure. Even picograms of single toxic compounds in a multicomponent mixture are easily identified as dark zones on a luminescent background. The results are documented by video imaging or photographically.
