TechPak Categories Absorbent Fibrous Material Materials which can absorb fluid yet retain their strength and shape are useful in many applications. This cost-effective and proven technology yields a resilient and absorbent material made up of two types of fiber which are intimately mixed together. Crimped or coiled synthetic fibers, typically of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), are used in conjunction with a water-loving, fluid-absorbing fiber such as cellulose from wood pulp, cotton fibers, or coated synthetic fibers. This combination yields a porous and permeable structure which has good absorptive capacity, good wet and dry strength, good resiliency, good wicking characteristics, softness, and good moisture retention. Fiber boards comprising a mixture of these two fiber types are commercially available and are very convenient as starting materials. Processing is straightforward and uses available equipment.
