| This invention relates to a process for forming a polymeric, thermoplastic nanocomposites comprising a continuous polymeric phase formed from a melt-processible polymer having (1) a melt processing temperature equal to about 220 degrees Centrigrade and (2) platelet particles having an average thickness equal to or less than 50 angstroms, a maximum thickness of about 100 angstroms, and (a) a secondary or primary ammonium cation complex and/or (b) a quaternary phosphonium cation complex bonded to their surface. The invention further relates to the composite materials formed from such a process and various articles formed from these materials by use of conventional shaping processes. Examples of such molded articles are components for technical, household, and sports equipment; apparatus castings; bottles and containers; electrical and auto components; circuits; fibers; films (for food packaging), etc. Such molded products possess a number of advantages over products molded from polymers having no nanodispersed platelets, including increased modulus, stiffness, wet strength, dimensional stability, and heat resistance, and decreased moisture adsorption, flammability, permeability to gases and liquids, and molding cycle time. |
