Control filter for improved removal of odors and other contaminants
A unique, compact, economical filtration device that removes gas phase contaminants from an air stream in a non-mechanical, non-cyclic, continuous manner is presented. The device avoids the problems common to other, prior-art (especially activated carbon) technologies, such as reduced air flow rates, a relatively high pressure differential across the activated carbon filter, and decreased molecule removal efficiency. Odor removal is accomplished by directing an air stream through a filter element -- consisting of a plurality of partially hollow wicking fibers -- that can capture the gas-phase contaminants. Each fiber includes internal cavities filled with fine carbon powder or zeolites and having a relatively small longitudinal extending opening. Each fiber also has a selected, contaminant-removing chemisorptive liquid disposed on a shallow layer on one side and large carbon particles applied to the other side. The chemisorptive liquid and fine carbon or zeolite powder remain within the wicking fiber cavities and generally do not enter the space between the wicking fibers; yet, through the longitudinal openings, these ingredients are in full communication with the air stream. The resulting device has been applied to entrap a wide range of specific odors, toxic gases, and a number of solid particles. Known as a "triad" technology, the technology was first applied to air and lube auto filters, but it may be extended to other applications and configurations, particularly those related to controlling air quality in various automotive, aerospace, and home building scenarios.
