| The Need - In PVC wire insulation it is often necessary to apply an outer jacket of polyamide in order to provide chemical resistance, toughness and abrasion resistance. It would be preferable to have one polymer composition with the proper balance of properties which could be applied in a single step. The Invention - The invention involves the discovery of improved compositions of a vinyl halide or vinylidene halide polymer, a polyamide, and a compatibilizing ethylene polymer having carbon monoxide and/or carboxyl functionality. These compositions display an outstanding balance of properties, which include chemical resistance, toughness and low temperature flexibility. Compatibilizing Features - Vinyl halide and vinylidene halide polymers are not inherently compatible with polyamides. However, compatilization if easily achieved through the use of ethylene copolymers having either carbon monoxide or pendant carboxylic acid groups. Improvement - 5x improvement in chemical resistance to isooctane/toluene absorption. Composition - Low melting polyamides such as nylon 12, 1212, 6, 612 are normally employed in an amount, which is 1.5 to 2 times the weight of the halide containing polymer.
