| The Need - A olyolefin/ethylene vinyl alcohol barrier packaging film with superior barrier properties compared to state-of-the-art blends. The Invention - The polymer blend, unexpectedly found to have the desired barrier properties, consists of a polyolefin, an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer and a compatibilizer ethylene copolymer having pendant acid or acetate groups. The invention also provides for a method for manufacturing a laminar shaped article. Compatibilizing Features - In order to achieve compatibility between the polyolefin and the ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer, an ethylene copolymer is used where there are pendant acid or acetate groups. Such mechanisms as hydrogen bonding with the pendant OH groups of the ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer promotes compatibility. Improvement - Significant reduction in oxygen and xylene permeation rates. Composition - (a) 60 to 98 % by weight of polyolefin (e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene and polybutylene) (b) 2 to 20 5 by weight of an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer having a melting point at least 5 °C higher than the polyolefin 0.15 to 20 parts by weight compatibilizing polymer (e.g. ethylene acrylic acid copolymer)relates laminar blends polyolefins ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymers superior barrier physical |
