Process for Manufacturing Rhenium Rocket Nozzles or Articles
Honeywell has developed a unique method to produce rocket nozzles with the capacity to withstand the higher combustion temperatures required by today's rocket propulsion industry. The ability to withstand higher combustion temperatures will reduce the amount of fuel (and the cost thereof) normally used to cool combustion nozzles. Rhenium, a metal with an extremely high melting point, provides increased mechanical toughness and integrity compared to refractory alloys such as columbium and other high temperature materials. Conventional powder metal and chemical vapor deposition techniques for processing rhenium are costly and difficult to control. Honeywell's economical method entails the production of a thick film, multi-layer, net shaped rhenium structure--hot isostatically pressed (HIP) around a molybdenum mandrel to form a desired shape. Chemical etching of the molybdenum exposes the rhenium article. This multi-layer process for producing a rhenium nozzle could appropriately be applied to various manufactured articles.unique uniform layer pure rhenium deposited outer surface molybdenum mandrel
