| The software described here allows the transformation of a negative image after scanning, into colors of the original scene, without having to print the positive image first. In this way, photographic information present only in the negative image (with a larger density range) can be preserved. The software corrects for background density of the film itself and does a tonal reconstruction so as to obtain a correct color balance in the resulting image. The way it does this is by using characteristic system curves for each color component. These curves show the relation between the luminance of a neutral color swatch in the scene and the density sensed by the scan system.
