| This technology is a method for modifying poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and is intended to impart melt processability so that the modified PEO may be drawn into thin films and fine fibers. The modification may be accomplished by mixing the poly(ethylene oxide), a polar vinyl monomer additive, and an initiator, and applying heat. This may be conveniently achieved using a reactive-extrusion process. The method is particularly suited to allow fibers with fine-scale diameters (e.g., less than 30 microns) and fine-gauge film (e.g., less than 1 mil thick) to be spun or extruded from PEO. These fine-scale fibers and thin films may have potential use in applications such as packaging, personal care products, and medical products, where water solubility is desired and melt extrusion processes are prefered.Poly(ethylene oxide) modified grafting polar vinyl monomers poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylates 2-hydroxyethyl onto backbone Grafting accomplished mixing monomer(s) initiator heat |
