| Today’s offices are hardly paperless. Copiers and printers churn through reams of photocopy-quality paper, causing both a filing and recycling problem. Filing, because important papers must be housed somewhere. Recycling, because imaging materials must be removed (de-inked) before used paper can be recycled. This process can be expensive. When paper documents are scanned into a computer system and turned into text files (for example, by an OCR system), there is no guarantee that the text in the file is character-for-character identical to the text on the paper. An error-correction process for the analog-to-digital conversion is lacking. This pair of technologies from opposite sides of the globe addresses these two issues—de-inking and scanner error correction. They show that information storage on paper is still a high-technology endeavor. |
