| Prevailing standard umbilical cord cutting requires four separate clamping and cutting maneuvers involving surgical instruments not readily found in resource poor settings, emergency and disaster situations. The umbilical cord combined disinfectant, clamp, cutter and containment system is a tool that simultaneously disinfects, clamps and cuts the umbilical cord. In addition, the "Bell-y Button" maintains a clean environment by allowing the device to be separated into two units, leaving the device in place on the newborn. This creates a protected environment next to the umbilical cord and reduces the risk for infectious organisms to enter. The device remains in place until the cord dries and falls off. It is easy to use in untrained hands. Inexpensive to produce and disposable, the device is made entirely of plastic, with the exception of two stainless steel razor edges located in the middle of the device. When in use, the umbilical cord is placed lengthwise in the unit and the unit is then closed over a plastic envelope containing disinfectant, simultaneously disinfecting, clamping and cutting the umbilical cord. The device is then separated into two parts, one side remaining on the newborn. Once closed, the device cannot be reopened, eliminating factors that are associated with increased risk of sepsis and neonatal tetanus development. Designed for use in resource poor settings, such as developing countries where sanitation is often lacking, the device has application in developed countries for emergency childbirth and disaster situations. |
