| This advanced technology product and process has been fully developed in 1999 by DSM and Smurfit Kappa Packaging to produce consistent, robust high energy fuel pellets from mixed and municipal waste. In the following period these pellets have been produced and marketed as ROFIRE® pellets. One ton of the energy pellets is equivalent in BTU to 12 cubic meters of natural gas and in excess of 26MJ/Kg, which means these fuel pellets have a similar energy value to coal. The pellets consist of waste paper and plastic (in excess of 60% plastic) and are manufactured using a unique double pelletizing step developed by DSM. These energy pellets have a high carbon content and burn easily and efficiently, this technique has enabled Kappa Paper Mill to make significant savings in waste handling costs, and the pellets could be used to run not only the fuel production facility, but other parts of the paper mill. In comparison to other fuel pellets, RDF and SRF on the market, this process produces a product with a higher calorific value, an easier to use product in terms of dosing, and most importantly a reproducible and quality controlled product (manufactured to ISO 9002 for 6 years). |
