| The polymerization methods allow the production of nanometer to micrometer scale polymer particles of nearly identical size. One method uses cyclodextrin as a complexing agent for hydrophobic monomers. A second method uses sulfur-free radical interceptors in the solvent, leading to the desired uniformity and size. A third method uses seeds with a comb structure to obtain homodispersity of the polymer beads. A fourth method uses seeds of crosslinked polymer having a soluble fraction of less than 25 weight % in the size range of 0.5 to 10 micrometers.
