| The use of a peelable release layer during the extrusion coating of a substrate allows a thin layer of a low viscosity polymer to be successfully applied. Often a poor bond is obtained between the substrate and the coating due to rapid cooling and solidification of the thin polymer layer. The release layer helps to slow this cooling. Further, when the substrate is coarse and porous (such as a fabric) pinholes in the polymer coating may form due to excessive penetration of the low viscosity polymer into the substrate. The release layer also helps to eliminate this problem. The approach may be used to laminate breatheable waterproof polymers to fabrics, but also has broad applicability for other extrusion coating processes. |
