| The inventor, a surgeon himself, noted that in order to adjust abdominal clamps during surgery, two hands have to be used. One hand has to unscrew the clamp while the other hand is used to pull the clamp in order to increase the operating field. One hand then has to retain the clamp in position while the tension screw is fastened with the other hand. This becomes frustrating during a surgery procedure when only one hand is available to move surgical retraction clamps. The problem was solved by designing a clamp with flat handles in which slots have been inserted at variable distances. To reset a clamp during surgery, the surgeon merely lifts the handle of the clamp, and slides it into another slot that fits into the frame. This automatically increases or reduces the operating field. The slots are laser cut at a 10 degree angle to prevent it from slipping from the frame. Retractor heads can swivel through 60 degrees from side to side to easily conform to the incision and internal organ shapes and limit bruising on the patient. Compared to this, competing retractor systems are very expensive to manufacture, and contain screw threads that are difficult to clean. Even though simple in appearance, the retractor, branded the Strauss Versatrac, displays clever and robust design features indicative of a designer well experienced in surgery. It can also be used for veterinary surgery. |
