| Flexible gas tight film "Claist" is prepared by a compact lamination of clay platelets of thickness around 1 nanometer each. A clay platelet is amply flexible, and consequently a compact, highly ordered lamination of clay layers provides a flexible film. The thickness of Claist is comparable to that of copy paper, 10-100 micrometers, and can be made much thicker by layering films together. The gas permeability of Claist at room temperature to hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and other inorganic gases is lower than the detectable limit: much lower than the permeability of conventional engineering plastics and comparable to that of aluminum foil. Besides, the gas barrier performance of Claist (ST) remains unchanged up to temperatures as high as 600 degree Centigrade. Heat resistant gasket, food package film, insulating film and optical film for electrical devices will be the promising application of Claist. |
