| Need for Application Firewalls Network security solution, such as firewalls and IPS, are commonly deployed by companies with a web presence. Such measures provide effective network level protection, stopping traffic that is not legitimate web usage. However, their very ubiquity and efficiency discourages hackers from attacking the network, and forces them to turn to other vulnerabilities in the web environment, i.e. to application attacks. Application attacks consist of seemingly legitimate HTTP/ HTTPS requests that contain malicious code. Examples include SQL injection, cross-site scripting, session hijacking and more. Publicised incidents include the theft of 19,000 credit card numbers from AT&T, 800,000 social security numbers from UCLA, and information about 53,000 credit card transactions from the Rhode Island Government website. Market Opportunity To secure the application, web application firewalls analyze incoming traffic, and stop harmful requests. Current application firewalls are mostly hardware appliances deployed before the web server to analyze and stop incoming attacks, usually with added functionality, e.g. acceleration or load balancing, for competitive differentiation. These solutions do not meet the needs of many segments of the industry, since they require many resources for acquisition, integration, and maintenance, and are unsuitable for flexible pricing models. |
