Hydrogen production from water using photocatalyst-electrolysis hybrid system
The present invention proposes a process for the production of a hydrogen gas from water wit reduced costs. This process consists of an aqueous solution containing ferric ions is irradiated with a light such as sunlight while maintaining the aqueous solution in contact with a photocatalyst to convert the ferric ions into ferrous ions. The obtained aqueous solution containing the ferrous ions is electrolyzed to yield a hydrogen gas.following examples further illustrate present reactor equipped inside pressure mercury lamp (400 V) mixture ml water mmol ferric sulfate WO3was charged space replaced argon evacuated maintained 35 torr irradiated stirring measuring amount oxygen gas chromatography average MA hours commencement irradiation mumol/hour cumulative MT 270 ratio Fe2+to Fe3+at 121 continued 20 immediately filtered filtrate two chambers separated exchange membrane pure sulfuric acid added SO4 2-concentration solution 05 mol/liter platinum wire disposed electrode reference Ag/AgCl (NaCl) measure anode potential electrolysis electrical cathode increased swept 002 V/minute potentiostat current began flowing 10 V(Ag/AgCl) simultaneous production hydrogen COMPARATIVE Electrolysis carried manner 15 V(Ag/AgCl(NaCl)) current-potential relationship shown solid line figure WOsub3 260 111
