Laser Drilling of Ceramic Composites to Form Smooth-Walled Holes
In laser-drilling ceramic composite for applications such as cooling holes — including holes drilled at highly acute angles — this technology creates a smooth bore that seals the composite’s reinforcing fibers. The seal created by the laser also preserves the surface oxidation barrier of the composite where mechanical and even laser drilling would compromise the ceramic’s integrity. Laser machining of holes in composites can produce undesirable surface characteristics in hole walls because of the ablative characteristics of the laser and differences in the components of the composite material and their interaction with the laser beam. This tested technology overcomes the difficulties posed by conventional laser drilling with techniques that recast the composite into a glassy-walled hole, thus integrating reinforcement protection and an oxidation barrier into the drilled material.present generally cooling holes ceramic matrix composite components specifically elevated temperatures silicon carbide nitride
