| Light and recyclable magnesium alloy has been drawing attention and is widely used for practical purposes such as mobile electronic equipment and vehicles. However, as magnesium and its alloys are very chemically-active metals, there is a possibility that they may ignite or burn when they are melted, cast, or cut and polished by machine. For that reason, in their melting or casting it is required to use SF6 gas or chlorine-based flux. AIST has succeeded in developing non-combustible magnesium alloy by adding calcium to magnesium alloy. In addition, by adding or compounding various elements or compounds to this non-combustible magnesium alloy, it has become possible to develop high strength type welding materials with new compositions. |
