| This development produces an inexpensive material that controls infection by building a hydrophilic bridge to the wound site, over which a powerful antimicrobial environment is established, continuously delivering in ppm sufficient dosage to only kill the bacteria, but not affect healthy tissue, and thus promoting wound closure. The material changes color to indicate dissipation of its antiseptic ability and the need to change the dressing. This is the first antimicrobial material that does not contaminate the wound site. Over the counter antibiotic ointments and salves not only are causing the development of more resistant strains of bacteria, but also leave residues of their carriers, many of which inhibit the healing process. The material can be in the form of an open-celled, non-linting, highly absorbent, biocompatible, moldable sponge or a cloth, and fabricable into any two or three dimensional shape to conform to any contoured body surfaces. It can be joined with all of the usual commercial films, barriers, adhesives etc. to produce unique product designs to treat burns, bed sores, chronic wounds, and difficult to treat infections. Some of the additional applications of this technology are expandable band-aid dressings (the first significant improvement in band-aids) and other consumer bandages, professional and hospital dressings, and military bandages with very long shelf life. Psoriasis, otitis externa, smallpox lateral infections, foot and general bacteria produced odors, industrial hospital and food service sanitizing wipes to remove germs and biofilms, and water and air filters are other applications.Iodine outstanding microbiocide extraordinary range action effective against wide organisms bacteria tubercle bacilli fungi yeast protozoa lipid non viruses benefits limited inability control delivery iodine wound site quantities necessary treat infection affecting surrounding healthy tissue Liquids excess elemental bound eg tinctures povidine antiseptics impregnated bandages potential corrosive destruction skin Borates microbially active beneficial antimicrobial certain infections combination borates enhance activity Boron itself toxic complexes plastic material harnessing adverse side effects harnessed insoluble controls release released (ppm) promotes faster healing reservoir efficacy depleted turns color indicating need dressing costly needless Iodophores current loose tri-iodides solubilizers polymeric carrier serves increase solubility tame sustained water polyvinyl pyrrolidones aqueous solutions present far concentration greatly reduce irritation contrast dissipate effectiveness relatively quickly liquids readily diluted washed away body fluids neutralization reaction serous miscible antimicrobials deficiency course introduce amounts Considering little 02 sufficient kill |
