Paracellular Drug Delivery Through Bakers Yeast Microcapsules
The focus of this technology is the ability of yeast to reversibly open up the junctions between cells to aid drug delivery. By micro encapsulating active ingredients inside the yeast cells, this technology enhances paracellular movement of active ingredients in mucus rich areas such as buccal, oral, nasal, vaginal, anal and others.

Application could be by means of powder, tablet, capsule, chewable tablet, chewing gum, melting film strip, spray, cream or gel. Yeast offers a very cost attractive alternative to chitosan as permeation enhancer, and mucoadhesive mechanism.

This offers specific opportunities to companies seeking non-invasive drug delivery solutions, such as non invasive insulin delivery - a market expected to grow to 200 million patients over the life span of this patent.

It may also be possible to have a multi-drug system where a water-soluble active ingredient, formulated together with yeast cells, ALSO HAS a lipophilic/water insoluble active ingredient entrapped within those yeast cells.

The core technology is supported by other patent areas specifically using yeast as carriers or microcapsules particularly in topical antifungal applications. Taste masking is also possible if yeast is used as a carrier for flavour delivery.

With new biological treatments being developed at a record pace, pharmaceutical delivery is now nearly as important as product.Lipophilic active ingredients partitioned central core yeast cell facilitated lipid bilayer membrane wall
