Cost Effective Industrial Production of Purified Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide (CO) is an important industrial gas, which is widely used in more than 29 industrial applications. It is of the global industrial gas market with an estimated market of worth of $23 bn, and 5.7% growth expected through 2009. A new cost effective and scalable method for producing this gas without the use of heat or steam has been developed. Several different methods of producing the gas are used by industry, including the heating of carbon in the form of coke with a limited supply of oxygen, or by reacting water in the form of steam with carbon. Another method involves dehydrating methanoic (formic) acid with concentrated sulfuric acid, even though this has been limited to lab scale production. This particular new technology provides a cost effective method for producing carbon monoxide by dehydrating formic acid with sulphuric acid on industrial scale. It results in food grade CO production, is scalable from small client-based systems, to large industrial installations. The method of monitoring the production and safety mechanisms resulted in a very safe production process. The fact that no heat or steam is used during the production process, also makes this an energy efficient method in comparison with existing technologies that are currently available. Typically 20% reduction in production costs or, 40% reduction in capital outlay is possible. New developments elsewhere in the world where ethanol is now produced by means of fermentation from CO, give early indicators that more cost effective CO production methods will become increasingly important.
