| A common problem encountered in the construction sector is that a wheeled scraper or other heavy construction equipment gets stuck due to unstable terrain. Often a bulldozer is required to pull/push vehicles that are stuck, resulting in additional costs. Not only does the construction company have to bear the cost of the bulldozer and operator, it continues to pay for the stuck piece of equipment and its operator. Also, it is a common scenario to wait up to 18 hours for tire repairs if the equipment is in an inaccessible area or the tire repair company needs to order a replacement tire. The company will continue to incur the cost of the machine and the operator while waiting on repairs. Of greater magnitude are the costs incurred due to the delays caused in project completion. This problem can be solved when construction vehicles are no longer at the mercy of unstable terrain conditions. Tracked vehicles are the solution to traversing terrain that is inaccessible to wheeled vehicles. A tracked vehicle eliminates the need for tires and enhances maneuverability. The principal design advantages of tracked versus wheeled vehicles are that they are in contact with a larger surface area than would generally be the case with a wheeled vehicle. As a result, they exert a much lower force per unit area on the ground being traversed than a conventional wheeled vehicle of the same weight. This makes them suitable for use on soft, low friction and uneven ground such as mud, ice and snow. |
