A Platform Electromechanical One and Two Dimensional Position Sensor to replace traditional LVDT, RVDT and LVIT sensors
This technology provides an elegant, efficient and cost effective way to measure absolute position in one or two dimensions using a new Point Coupled Linear Transformer (PCLT). Movement and position can be detected on flat or curved surfaces. The sensor has a solid theoretical foundation and employs well established, reliable and cost effective production techniques. By nature of its design, the sensor has excellent linearity and the DC output voltage allowing it to be used as a direct drop-in replacement for other position sensors. This makes it an economically viable solution with very low switching costs. The North American market for linear displacement sensors including encoders, linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs), laser systems, magnetostrictive, potentiometric, capacitive, inductive, and ultrasonic products totalled $338.7 million in 2006. This provides a projected global market value exceeding $1 billion. To-date, inductive sensors (LVDT/RVDT/LVIT) dominated the market, but they have certain limitations which can be overcome by this new technology. Namely, PCLTS can be used to measure position on flat or curvilinear surfaces and can also be extended to 2-D measurements whereas LVDTs are limited to 1-D position sensing. PCLT also has a 90% Stroke-to-length range which is 30% better than LVDTs. This could result in a 30% - 60% weight reduction of the sensor. This technology offers strong patents and IP traceability that are available for license to suitable sensor manufacturing companies. Considering the obvious benefits in terms of cost and improved performance, it can potentially become the new sensor standard replacing LVDT’s.typical layout primary (P) secondary (S1 S2) windings PCLT illustrated below
