| The project objective is to develop a portfolio of products for book digitization, to manufacture these products and to prepare to distribute them on the international market. These products should be capable of digitizing books with automated or manual page turning system, and also to avoid damage. The uniqueness of this product portfolio arises from a patented technical solution which is the only one in the world to enable books to be digitized with an opening angle of only 45°. The intended trademark for the product portfolio and the project name is: “Alexandria Book Scanner Libraries worldwide are hosting millions of books, which are only accessible to users actually present at these libraries. Unique or very old books are often closed from the public for preservation reasons. The trend towards book digitization is not only driven by market demand arising from the fact that an increasing number of people wish to access information via the Internet in electronic formats. It is also being driven by the fact that the costs involved with providing places where people have access to old books, and protecting and preserving those books are increasing. Google, Yahoo, Amazon and many other institutes (libraries, museums) have started digitization projects in the recent years. Besides, in almost all corner of the world there is state support available for book digitization programs [see for example the Planets Project - Preservation and Long-term Access through Networked Services of the EU, launched in 2006]. |
