Simplified Process for Making Polyhydroxystyrene (PHS) from p-Hydroxycinnamic Acid (pHCA)
PHS and copolymers have wide ranging applications including, for example, photoresists, varnishes, and printing inks. This technology enables the conversion of pHCA, a chemical intermediate that can be sourced from fermenting glucose, to PHS or copolymers of PHS. The technology, a controlled decarboxylation for hydroxysttyrene (HSM) production followed by free radical polymerization of HSM has several key features --- (1) the HSM produced is pure enough for direct polymerization without purification, (2) the HSM produced is long term stable during storage and transport allowing process flexibility, (3) this flexibility permits various manufacturing configurations for minimizing cost, allowing economy of scale in HSM for supporting multiple homopolymer and copolymer units, (4) HSM homopolymers are linear and controllable in MW over a wide range --- 3000 to 30,000 have been demonstrated., (5) HSM homo and copolymers produced by this simplified process are comparable in quality to HSM polymers produced by more expensive multi-step processes.pHCA decarboxylated carefully solvent HSM pure enough free radical polymerization PHS
