Circulatory assist pump for cardiac use leading to implantable artificial heart device
The single-pivot centrifugal pump was designed for external use as a circulatory assist pump that can be used for two weeks or more. External circulatory assist pumps are used before and after surgery. We are performing flow visualization experiments and pivot wear testing to resolve the problems of blood cell damage, clotting, and mechanical wear that occur at pivot bearings. We did animal testing and flow visualization testing on clotting, and as a result we have adjusted the hole diameter and spacing on the impeller so that the secondary blood flow washes the pivot. This adjustment resolved the clotting problem, as demonstrated in a week-long anti-coagulation test with a sheep. Since 1995 we have researched and developed a ventricular assist device with the final goal of implantation. Our first step is to develop a single-pivot external centrifugal pump, which can be used before and after surgery. We are also developing a pump that uses a next-generation centrifugal pump using a non-contact hydrodynamic bearing that can be implanted in the body for long periods of time.primary death Japan cancer followed heart disease stroke (Ministry Health Labor Welfare survey 1999) patients treated transplantation average four donors year few people receive transplants rare opportunities created demand artificial hearts
