| Rapidly evolving ebook technology promises to deliver books, catalogs, newspapers, or magazines anywhere electronically on compact easy-to-carry readers. The next generation of readers must offer clear type and crisp images — in black-and-white and color, and likely on facing screens that truly emulate the “look and feel” of a physical book. However, ebooks face challenges that physical books do not: file security during transmission, speed of transmission, and the risk of piracy. The ReadAllOver™ system is a proprietary dual solution of compressed file format and rendering software especially engineered for the next generation of ebooks. It provides superior graphics, color, animation, and digital rights management (DRM), as well as compressed file size. The rendering engine makes use of advanced display features already available in display devices to emulate halftoning and to achieve a level of print-quality reproduction that is readily apparent to the human eye. Compressed file sizes are comparable to JPEG, JP2, PDF, and HDPhoto. Because the system is proprietary, manufacturers have direct access to the formatting and rendering code, making DRM an integrated part of the system and permitting code adjustments and improvements where a standards-based rendering engine would not.
