| Hydrogen is potentially a valuable fuel. It burns cleanly and its “ash” consists of water vapor. Photocatalysts capable of activating hydrogen production from water were developed decades ago, but these photocatalysts operate only under ultraviolet light, which accounts for only 4% of incoming solar radiation. This renders hydrogen production impractical. Visible light accounts for about 43% of incoming solar energy; but systems that are stable and efficient in these wavelengths have not been available until now. This new technology provides a metal oxide semiconductor photocatalyst that splits hydrogen from oxygen in water under visible light, and is unaffected by the absence of UV (although it can make use of UV). In addition to decomposing water, the technology also can decompose other chemical substances, including malodorous gases and harmful substances contained in a gas or liquid such as air or water, or that are deposited on solid surfaces. Harmful substances to be decomposed may be NOx, SOx, fluorocarbons, ammonia gas, hydrogen sulfide, alcohols, aldehydes, amines, mercaptans, and a host of other chemicals and compounds.recent years photocatalysts attracted attention production oxygen hydrogen water Utilization environmental clarification material removing malodors decomposing harmful substances pollutants air researched extensively case photo-decomposition energy-accumulating reaction |
