Photolysis method decomposes fluorine-containing organic material
A new technique decomposes fluorine-containing organic materials at relatively low temperature in the presence of oxygen, using light, and allows the fluorine ions to be converted to a harmless state. Perfluorocarboxylic acids, perfluorosulfonic acids and similar fluorine-containing organic compounds have been used for years as emulsifying agents and in applications such as oil-, water-, and stain-resistant coatings. Fluorine-containing organics form tight, co-valent chemical bonds; thus, they are difficult to break down in the environment by natural means, and they persist, posing an environmental hazard. Perfluorooctanoic acid, for example (PFOA) is bioaccumulative. This photocatalytic technologydecomposes otherwise difficult-to-decompose fluorine-containing organic materials in a process that breaks them down in the presence of a photocatalyst, using the energy from sunlight (primarily the visible wavelengths).relates decomposing fluorine-containing organic material
