Trans-Skull Ultrasound Scanner for the Diagnostic of Rhino-Sinusitis
Rhino-Sinusitis, or sinus infection, is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, which can be caused by different conditions (bacterial, fungal, viral, allergic or autoimmune). In the U.S. it is one of the most common healthcare problems resulting in more than $5.8 billion in direct health care expenditure. Sinusitis caused by viable bacteria trapped in the fluid in the paranasal sinuses, requires treatment with antibiotics. Nevertheless, most of the cases of sinusitis are caused by a viral infection, rendering any treatment with antibiotics useless (98% of the cases). Bacterial rhino-sinusitis is currently assessed by puncture or imaging techniques (xRay or CT) in order to detect the presence of an air-fluid level within the paranasal sinuses. The absence of this level is significant enough to rule out bacterial infection. The system presented in this techpak provides a reliable, non-invasive and low-cost procedure to evaluate the presence of fluid inside the paranasal sinuses by means of an ultrasound scan (A-Scan).
