Solid Oxide Fuel Cell
This technology is a solid oxide fuel cell with a projected cost of $90/kW or lower. The fuel cell uses a stabilized bismuth oxide ceramic extruded in a honeycomb shape with square openings. Electrodes are applied to the walls of the honeycomb and alternate rows are open to the air which is used as a source of oxygen (the fuel cell cathode rows). The other rows (anode rows) are sealed except for inlet and outlet ports for fuel at opposite ends of the rows which are manifolded to tubes. Fuel (hydrogen or methane) flows into and down the closed rows and out the other end. As with any solid oxide fuel cell, oxygen diffuses from the cathode side of the walls to the anode side, combines with the fuel and produces power. Since bismuth oxide has an oxygen conductivity 50 - 100 times larger than the commonly used zirconia, the fuel cell can be operated at temperatures below 650 C where inexpensive stainless steels can be used for manifolding and glasses can be used for sealing. This solves the manifolding and sealing problems inherent in other solid oxide fuel cells operating at higher temperatures. A comprehensive White Paper is available upon request.
