| Ceramic materials have been developed with very large dielectric constants at 77 K (liquid nitrogen temperature). These materials have been made into multilayer capacitors and tested at high voltages to breakdown. Energy storage densities as large as 14 J/cc have been measured, and there is good evidence that the energy storage density can be pushed much higher (20 - 40 J/cc) with elimination of flaws in the manufacturing process. Operating the capacitors at 77 K has the advantage that most of the common breakdown mechanisms at room temperature have been frozen out at the lower temperature. There is no electric-field-induced strain in the preferred material which eliminates the major cause of breakdown at 77 K. Energy is stored in these capacitors at high voltages which allow for efficient recovery of the stored charge. Leakage currents in these materials are very low, and the charge/discharge cycling time is very fast, allowing for high rep rates. Maintaining a bath of liquid nitrogen is an inexpensive technology because of the ready availability of superinsulated containers and highly efficient and reliable liquifiers.
