Method for the Preparation of Metal Carbene Complexes
The chemistry of late-transition-metal carbene complexes has received much attention primarily due to the high catalytic activity of phosphine ruthenium carbene complexes in olefin metathesis. There are several synthetic approaches towards carbene complexes, with the ones utilizing the corresponding diazoalkane being the most popular. However, the instability of diazo compounds and the safety issues involved in handling them seriously limit this method. The present invention provides a new, synthetically simple, high yield and safe method toward carbene preparation by using sulfur ylides, which are readily available from organic halides and organic sulfides. The new synthetic route can be applied to a variety of metals. Moreover, it can be used for synthesis of unknown carbenes, which are difficult to obtain by known methods.relates general metal carbene complexes
