| Neuritin is a polypeptide which is expressed primarily in certain brain tissues in response to certain stimuli such as neurotrophic factors. Many neurological disorders have shown aspects of neurodegeneration, incuding Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, psychiatric disorders and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in several brain areas including the hippocampus and the striatum. Neurotrophic factors are known to increase growth and/or survival of neurons. This invention provides polypeptide fragments, or nucliec acid sequences encoding these fragments, that have the biological activity of Neuratin, a protein whose expression is induced by neurotrophins.
