| The present invention relates to vanadium complexes useful for the treatment of diabetes. In vitro, vanadium salts mimic most of the effects of insulin on the main target tissues of the hormone. Initial clinical studies with low doses of vanadium have yielded several beneficial effects such as abolishing hyperglycemia. The potential usage of vanadium in the future care of diabetes in human, however, requires the development of forms of vanadium with increased insulinomimetic efficacy, without increasing its toxicity. The present invention shows that certain amino acid monohydroxamates interact with intracellular vanadium and and converts it into an active insulinomimetic species.
