| The present invention is in the general field of information retrieval, and concerns, more specifically a novel technique for attaining private information retrieval from databases. Accessing a publicly accessible database on the internet may pose a significant risk to the privacy of the user. A database operator on the database end can follow the user`s queries and infer what data the user is after. When accessing a single database, to completely guarantee the privacy of the user, the whole database should be downloaded. The development of distributed databases and various kinds of data-services result in that the same database is replicated in several sites. This makes it possible to overcome the difficulty of achieving privacy in the single database scenario. The present invention is a set of communication protocols that enables the user to make queries to several databases. From the answers, the user can reconstruct the desired data item, while from each query no knowledge about the data item sought by the user is revealed to any one of the databases.
