| Successful welding of Nitinol to ferrous alloys including Stainless Steels is achieved by using certain filler metals which help avoid the brittle phases formed during fusion welding of Nitinol to ferrous alloys. Sucessful laser welding of wire-to-wire and tube-to-butt joints using this technology has resulted in weld strength increase from 0 to 90ksi. The increase strength was accompanied by dramatic reduction of weld metal strength from 900 down to 450 Vickers. This technology can help create Nitinol to Stainless Steel welds which can help in reduction in the usage of Nitinol. Nitinol is an expensive material as compared to Stainless Steel and hence this technology can be used to save a lot of money for companies making parts using Nitinol. |
