| Hygiene has become a major concern of our modern society, hygeinic protection of products in hospitals, public places, or at the home is a thing valued and demanded by customers. Microbials such as algae, bacteria and fungi, attack the surface of the materials resulting in odor, staining, discoloration, loss of mechanical properties, formation of bio-films, and potential cross contamination. While the use of synthetic chemicals as biocides has improved the world’s standard of living by controlling the growth or killing unwanted microbes, overuse and misuse has created some environmental harm like harming birds (DDT), killing honeybees, and drug-resistant “super-bugs”. These issues have renewed an interest in investigating the use of natural products as biocides. The present invention relates to a novel family of natural biocides. The biocides demonstrate broad-spectrum effectiveness in oil-producing, refining industries, and can be used to protect oils, concrete, paper, electronics, resins, textiles, leather, wood and other materials. Another applications include disinfection of submersible and spacecraft interiors, medical instruments sterilization and preservation of gels. |
