Phenolic Epoxy Monomers and Polymers Derived from Glucose
Para-glycidyloxystyrene (pGS) is produced in a simple one pot, two-step conversion of hydroxycinnamic acid, a raw material derived from renewable resources. The inexpensive raw material coupled with the simple synthesis process of this technology are keys to commercial success. This monomer has great versatility and utility due to its epoxy functionality and its superior thermal, chemical, and hydrolytic resistance relative to the most commonly used epoxy-containing vinylic monomer, glycidyl methacrylate. The epoxy functionality is highly useful for curing and adhesion. For example, pGS monomer may be used as a functional component of coatings, adhesives, films, plastics, resins, elastomers, automotive finishes and inks, as well as in electronic materials. This technology also includes the use of substituted hydroxycinnamic acids. Polymerization of homopolymers or copolymers of pGS provide materials with advantages in performance and versatility in the applications listed aboveDetailed descriptions synthesis operating conditions patents
