| These technologies comprise a set of polymers for use as pigment dispersants that have differing backbones and side arms that are hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and optional side chains such as amines. The dispersants are designed to give better pigment dispersion efficiency, broader coating composition stability, improved appearance, and reduction in cost of coating compositions. This set of dispersants is especially useful for high technology pigments and includes (1) an AB co-polymer having at least one quatenary ammonium functional group that helps stabilize pigments having a pH below 7.0 in an organic liquid carrier. These pigment dispersants can be utilized in a multitude of color coat or base coat compositions, yielding high-end performance and appearance. They are excellent at maintaining rheology enabling easier and more uniform application; (2) an acrylic graft copolymer comprising a hydrophobic polymeric backbone and discrete anionic and nonionic hydrophilic side chains attached to the backbone. The graft copolymers provide stable and non-flocculating aqueous pigment dispersions when formulated into high performance waterborne coating compositions. The chemistry of the backbone and side chains is balanced to give better pigment dispersion efficiency, broader coating composition stability, improved appearance and reduction in cost of waterborne compositions; (3) dispersants prepared by the reaction of isocyanate oligomers with polyester or polyacrylates, a poly (ethylene glycol) alkyl ether, and a diamine having a primary and tertiary amine functionality. This formulation differs from prior art in that it encompasses a unique combination of hydrophobic arm(s), hydrophilic arm(s), and amine arm(s) functionality linked to a urethane backbone. The use of mixed arms provides broader solubility characteristics and thereby greater utility with a wider range of coatings vehicles.Full descriptions dispersants preparation detailed patents |
