| DuPont has excellent capability in resin chemistry and has developed proprietary resins suitable for photochromic coatings that can be applied and cured on optical lenses and other surfaces. While the specific dye package can be selected by a customer, the properties of the resin need to be tailored in such a way that there is sufficient molecular volume for the dye particles, and optimised viscosity for commercial application equipment and adhesion to primer coats and hardcoats that may also be required. Having a strong proprietary position to a licensee and marketer can be extremely valuable to establish a new brand and trademark. Being able to make and apply these optically clear coatings in-house on lenses, for example, can yield substantial savings vs. having this done by contractors. |
