Rotor Hub Spindle Installer/Remover for Helicopters
This tool removes the rotor hub spindles for several types of helicopter rotor hub designs. Rotor hubs and spindles are responsible for articulating the blades during flight to achieve different flight characteristics. During maintenance and inspection a helicopter's spindles (which weigh about 170 pounds each) are removed from the central rotor hub atop the helicopter. This is a very unpredictable process that can take anywhere from minutes to days due to the elastomeric bearings that tend to stick inside the rotor hub housing. In addition, replacing the special sealant on the bearing causes difficulty with spindle installation due to tight tolerances within the rotor hub housing. As a consequence, this maintenance step is often omitted, which can lead to increased internal wear and pitting. The current spindle removal procedure requires multiple personnel to stand atop the helicopter and wrestle the spindle out of the rotor hub. Also needed is a crane operator to suspend and lower/raise the spindle in a sling assembly, and a person on the ground with a line attached to the spindle to guide its movements laterally. Atop the helicopter, the new tool requires only one person to remove the spindle and can be done in seconds, while current procedures can take up to several hours. The tool is lightweight, easy to handle and intuitive to use. The tool is easy to manufacture as it is made up of two primary components: an adapter plate that fits to a rotor assembly, and a slide hammer. The tool’s method of operation is key for breaking the inadvertent adhesion of the elastomeric bearing materials on the spindle from the housing, and for removing or installing the spindle with a minimum of disturbance to paint, primer or sealant coatings. This method significantly reduces the chance of damage during the installation and removal process. This innovation has four patents pending and foreign protection is available. The owner is seeking to license the innovation.
